Every year on 21st February, tourist guides around the world come together to celebrate International Tourist Guide Day (ITGD), honouring their profession and its vital role in society. The 2025 theme, “Tourist Guides as Peace Ambassadors,” highlights the unique contribution of guides in fostering understanding, inclusion, and harmony among cultures.

In South Africa, Value-Added Tax (VAT) is a consumption tax levied at a standard rate of 15% on most goods and services, including those within the tourism industry.
The Institute of Professional Tourist Guides of Southern Africa (IPTGSA) is dedicated to upholding the highest standards in tourist guiding across the region. Our mission is to enhance visitor experiences by promoting professionalism, ethical conduct, and continuous development among tourist guides.
At the National Department of Tourism we measure success not only in the visitor numbers, but in the experiences we create, the new opportunities for meaningful employment and growth and the understanding that is fostered between people from different backgrounds and different corners of the world and our tourist guides play an integral role in this
