Strengthening the Voice of Professional Tourist Guides
Since its official establishment as a Non-Profit Company (NPC) in 2017, the Institute of Professional Tourist Guides Association of South Africa (IPTGSA) has been unwavering in its commitment to advancing the interests of tourist guides. Operating under the strict regulatory framework set by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), the association has proactively aligned itself with professional body regulations to facilitate streamlined registration processes in the near future.
At the core of IPTGSA’s leadership are actively working tourist guides who bring firsthand industry knowledge and experience to the table. This ensures that all initiatives and decisions are informed by the realities of the profession, thereby fostering meaningful and impactful representation.
Commitment to Professional Development
The association places a strong emphasis on Continuing Professional Development (CPD), recognising that lifelong learning is essential in maintaining high industry standards. IPTGSA has consistently provided frequent educational offerings to enhance the skills and knowledge base of its members, equipping them with up-to-date industry insights and best practices.
Active Industry Engagement and Advocacy
IPTGSA remains actively involved in key governmental and industry forums, ensuring that the voice of professional tourist guides is heard at the highest levels. Committee members regularly attend crucial meetings such as the National Stakeholders Forum, Indaba, and various other industry platforms where policies and developments affecting the guiding profession are discussed.
In line with its commitment to comprehensive industry engagement, IPTGSA has undertaken wide consultations with various professional organisations, including the South African Chefs Association, the Association of Southern African Travel Agents (ASATA), the Professional Hunters Association of South Africa, and the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA). These collaborations not only strengthen the association’s network but also contribute to a more integrated and professional tourism sector. Further engagements of this nature are currently in progress.
Shaping the Future of Tourist Guiding
The IPTGSA has actively participated in the development of qualifications under the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO), working alongside accredited training providers to ensure that training standards align with industry demands. The association recognizes that tourist guiding comprises three key pillars—Nature Guiding, Adventure Guiding, and Culture Guiding. While these areas share a common guiding profession, their distinct training requirements necessitate specialised oversight. Consequently, IPTGSA envisions the establishment of three distinct professional bodies, each regulating its respective sector while maintaining a unified standard of excellence across the profession.
A Proactive Approach to Industry Challenges
Far from being reactive, IPTGSA prides itself on a proactive stance in addressing the evolving landscape of tourist guiding. By anticipating industry shifts, engaging with key stakeholders, and prioritising professional development, the association continues to strengthen the role of tourist guides within the broader tourism sector. Through strategic initiatives and forward-thinking policies, IPTGSA remains dedicated to enhancing the professionalism, credibility, and recognition of South Africa’s tourist guides.
With continued support from its members, IPTGSA will persist in advocating for industry improvements, fostering collaboration, and ensuring that South Africa’s tourist guides receive the professional status and respect they deserve.
