The Tourism Amendment Bill has been published for public comments by the Minister of Tourism on the 15th of April 2019. The Bill seeks to amongst other things, regulate short term home rental; provide for additional competency requirements for tourist guides; and provide for the regulation of safety in relation to tourist guides.

The Department of Tourism (Department) utilises various media and awareness platforms as a way of reaching out and making the necessary impact in the tourism sector. In this regard, the Department endeavours at all times to be informative, educational and motivational, especially to the tourist guiding sector which is in a process being recognised as an attractive profession, particularly, by the younger generation. The third edition of the tourist guides newsletter intends to share important information on the various initiatives implemented by the Department for the benefit of tourist guides

The Department of Tourism is currently conducting a survey to understand the proficiency and foreign language training needs of tourist guides. The findings from the survey will assist the Department to determine future foreign language training programmes for the tourist guiding sector.

Tourism has released the 2015/16 State of Tourism report to inform government and industry decision makers and businesses about the sector’s performance. The report provides a holistic view of the environment that the sector operates in whilst taking into account the challenges and opportunities associated with external factors in the country.
